$6M for HD, the Airbnb for surgeries (and more)

January 4, 2023
HD

Say hi to HD! This startup is making healthcare and surgeries affordable, accessible and simple in Southeast Asia. (Sounds familiar? You may know them by their previous name, HonestDocs)

Now, they've just raised a $6M funding round!

  • Founded in 2019, they've already served 250,000 patients.
  • They're the leading healthcare and surgery marketplace in emerging SEA, with HD's sales growing 7x during the pandemic.
  • They work with 1,500 healthcare providers, including some of the largest hospitals in their markets.

Investor check. Partech Partners, M Venture Partners, AC Ventures, WV (Wing Vasiksiri) and Orvel Ventures joined in!

  • This is their second round of external funding, and they previously raised a seed round in 2019.

🩺 Like Amazon, Lazada or Shopee — but for healthcare

They're best known for HDmall, a marketplace mainly for outpatient services, which don't require hospital admission or overnight stays. They operate in Indonesia and Thailand.

  • Head to them if you need medicine, a checkup, test, dental work, teleconsultation, vaccination or dermatology treatment!
  • Though, they do offer a few inpatient procedures.

Money matters. It works just like many other e-commerce platforms do. Healthcare providers list their services, while HDmall takes a cut from transactions and charges a listing fee.

  • HDmall also offers marketing solutions for providers who want to boost their reach and sales.

👨🏻‍⚕️🏥 Airbnb for surgeries?

With HDcare, patients can access cheaper surgeries for 15–20% less than market prices.

  • Oh-so-fast. Launched two months ago, they already have 20+ operating rooms, and 40+ types of surgeries lined up in Indonesia and Thailand.
  • HDcare is expected to contribute 40% of revenue by 2024.

Wait, how's it like Airbnb? It leverages extra space! Operating rooms at hospitals and clinics are underutilized, so HDcare uses those vacant operating rooms instead!

  • They work with surgeons that have their own private practice (which is common in SEA) to perform the surgeries.
  • HD prioritizes minimally-invasive, short-stay surgeries with low output variation (aka, less risky) like thyroid, hemorrhoid, and orthopedic surgery.

A win for everyone. Patients get cheaper surgeries, hospitals maximize their spaces (and make $$$ from room rates), and surgeons can earn more.

😱 But wait, there's more!

On top of all that, you can even access financing for both outpatient and inpatient procedures.

Plus, we all hate dealing with reimbursements. So, they'll help you deal with it if you have health insurance or company coverage!

💥 What's next?

They'll be using the $$$ to strengthen their leading position in the space, grow the team and develop their tech.

  • The goal? Grow to 5,000 healthcare providers, 300 operating rooms and thousands of surgeries by 2024.
