ArrowBiome raises $1M to use microbiome tech to transform your skin

June 18, 2024

Got skin problems? ArrowBiome is here to solve them! This Singapore-based biotech startup uses microbiome tech to transform your skin. Now, they’ve just raised a $1M seed!

Investor check. Cocoon Capital led the round.

  • They’re a spin-off from the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology Centre and Nanyang Technological University.

🦠 About the tech

They’re here to balance your microbiome! Current treatments aren't targeted enough, which affect both beneficial and harmful bacteria.

  • This can lead to the disruption of the natural microbiome balance in the human body and cause antibiotic resistance.

But since ArrowBiome engineers and produces lysins (aka, proteins evolved by bacteriophages) in the lab, they can precisely target what bacteria to kill.

  • Bacteriophages are viruses that infect and replicate within bacteria, often killing their bacterial hosts in the process.
  • ArrowBiome’s targeted approach impacts only harmful bacteria while maintaining a healthy microbiome balance to minimise adverse side-effects.

❓ Who are their customers?

Their initial target market is fighting acne and body odor. They’ll offer their solutions to personal care companies, specialty chemical manufacturers, and other businesses in the cosmeceutical industry.

  • One of their platform technologies allows for over 100x lower doses of active ingredients compared to current market products, achieving the same effectiveness but with minimal side effects.

🔜 What’s next?

They’ll use the $$$ for R&D, clinical validation, more commercial partnerships, and to establish the company as a leader in microbiome management.

  • Apart from developing solutions for the skin, they also plan on developing applications for the gut microbiome and antimicrobial resistance.
