Ice Breakers

Ice Breakers with Jacqueline Maye Lim

September 13, 2022

Jacqueline Maye Lim is Philippine Country Head at the Nas Company (formerly Nas Academy). Before the Nas Company, she was Head of GrabExpress at Grab Philippines.

👋🏼 How would you explain your job to someone outside tech?

At the Nas Company, we bring people together through content from Nas Daily Studios, education at Nas Academy and communities at Nas.io. My job is not to make videos for our socials, it is to introduce nas.io to Filipinos.

Nas.io allows you to build your own online community linked to your users' favorite apps (Facebook Groups, Telegram, or Discord) as quickly as 1-2-3.

My team also designs and builds customizable end-to-end community experiences for companies to allow them to engage their consumers beyond selling and branded content.

Essentially, if you want to build a community here, go to me or visit nas.io, and let's figure something out.

🧐 What's something about you or your job that would surprise us?

My childhood dream was to become a teacher, and I graduated with a degree in electronics engineering. Now, here I am leading Nas Academy and Nas.io here in the Philippines or, as some would joke about it, the "Dean of Student Affairs" who makes students interact.

🏆 What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?

I cannot possibly pick one, but here are two themes around when I feel the most fulfillment:

1. Making a direct impact on society through the underserved communities.

These mean a lot because they help people who are most in need. All the efforts we made for drivers & riders, the seller club launched during the pandemic, and now at Nas Academy and Nas.io, the community classes and free workshops that gave people around the country to learn skills like content creation, crypto, writing, self-confidence and productivity.

2. Seeing former interns, team members and direct reports shine in the Philippine startup space.

I'd like to say that empowering and giving opportunities and support systems to these people early in their careers is part of them gaining the confidence to do something bigger.

🔍 What's a startup trend or space you're watching this year?

The convergence of the creator economy and Web3.0 space in decentralization and community building.

We are already starting to see big brands and celebrities launching their NFTs. The next part will be adding value or token utility to these NFTs. This means the most natural next step will be a token-gated community, rewards program etc.

Will be looking forward to see how brands, startups and creators work towards Web3.0.

💼 What advice would you give someone starting out in your industry?

Look for great mentors that will guide you and peers who will support you. Nothing is impossible when you believe in what you do and have a great support system!

🗣 What's one thing you can keep talking about for hours?

Good food! I love to eat; restaurants, new recipes, cafes, etc. Also, I am naturally curious.

I cannot sleep until I figure something out, and because of that, I spend hours searching for things online, watching content and connecting with people. This leads to me talking about the new things I learned and how possibilities are endless.

🎥 What's your favorite movie/TV show?

Depending on my mood, the list includes: Big Bang Theory, Designated Survivor, The Good Wife, Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

🍨 What's your go-to ice cream flavor?

Pistachio!
