Ice Breakers

Ice Breakers with Muhammad Agung Saputra (Founder and CEO, Surplus Indonesia)

May 28, 2024

Muhammad Agung Saputra is the founder and CEO of Surplus Indonesia. Launched in 2021, they help major food suppliers sell surplus food at low prices with retail and hospitality clients like Marriott International.

They’ve raised around $650k in funding.

👋🏼  How would you explain your job to someone outside tech?

Surplus Indonesia is an online marketplace focused on selling overstock and imperfect produce.

My role involves connecting F&B owners, farmers, and producers with consumers, ensuring that these surplus goods find a valuable home instead of going to waste.

It's like a digital platform where we match people looking for quality produce at a lower cost with suppliers who have excess inventory, creating a sustainable solution for both sides of the market.

🧐  What's something about you or your job that would surprise us?

The impact it has on reducing food waste. At Surplus Indonesia, we not only provide a marketplace for overstock and imperfect produce but also contribute to a more sustainable food system.

It's rewarding to know that every sale made through our platform is a step towards minimizing waste and supporting farmers and producers.

Since we committed to supporting the SDG 2 (Zero hunger); 12 (Responsible Consumption & Production); and 13 (Climate Action), every 1 meal rescued through our app means preventing a lot of financial loss for business owners and for our customers as well as avoiding tons of CO2e from the landfill.

🏆  What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?

The biggest highlight of my career has been achieving B Corp certification for Surplus Indonesia. This recognition reflects our commitment to not only business success but also social and environmental impact.

Additionally, being awarded "The Best Apps for Good 2023 in Indonesia" by Google Play was a significant honor.

These acknowledgments validate our mission of promoting sustainability and reducing food waste through innovative technology, marking key milestones in our journey to make a positive difference in the world.

🔍  What's a startup trend or space you're watching this year?

One startup trend I'm closely watching this year is the rise of "regenerative agriculture" ventures.

These startups focus on farming practices that aim to restore and enhance ecosystems, rather than simply sustain them.

Given the growing awareness of climate change and the need for sustainable food production, regenerative agriculture offers a promising solution. It's exciting to see how these startups are innovating in areas like soil health, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration, paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient food system.

💼  What advice would you give someone starting out in your industry?

If someone is starting out in the sustainable agriculture and food waste reduction industry, my advice would be to immerse yourself in the community and network as much as possible.

Attend industry events, join relevant online forums, and seek out mentorship from those with experience. It's also crucial to stay updated on the latest trends and technologies shaping the field, as innovation is key in this rapidly evolving space.

Most importantly, maintain a strong passion for sustainability and a commitment to making a positive impact, as this will drive you through the challenges and successes of this rewarding industry.

🗣  What's one thing you can keep talking about for hours?

The startup founder life; the circular economy industry; ESG startups

🎥  What's your favorite movie/TV show?

The Prestige.

🍨  What's your go-to ice cream flavor?

Classic vanilla. It's versatile, timeless, and can be paired with so many toppings and desserts!
