Vincent (Vince) Siu is the Founder and Lead Producer at Press Start Studios, a Hong Kong-based game studio that creates award-winning game and interactive media projects for education and impact.
👋🏼 How would you explain your job to someone outside tech?
I design games and interactive media for education and impact.
🧐 What's something about you or your job that would surprise us?
Not sure if this “surprises” per se, but my team and I get to play games and call it work! It's sometimes a little envy-inducing…
🏆 What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?
I feel that every new milestone is a big highlight to be honest! But my highlights will always be around students, so let's go with when a group of seventh graders writing on the board on the last day of a summer program: "I wish you were our English teacher".
🔍 What's a startup trend or space you're watching this year?
AI in education, but not for the reasons you might think! I believe education is all about the vision and the process, and the tools are secondary. While Gen AI is a powerful tool, without the right pedagogical context, which it certainly doesn't have natively, it won't be effective for learners, and it certainly won't address core learning needs.
After a whole year of hype in this space, I think the next couple of years will be a time for reflection and consolidation. I don't think it'll die down completely because education is ripe for disruption, but I do hope that a more mindful and pedagogically driven integration will emerge.
💼 What advice would you give someone starting out in your industry?
In games, as in education, failing and iterating are the most important ways to learn. Don't chase after perfection, just build it and test it.
🗣 What's one thing you can keep talking about for hours?
If "games and education" is too boring and predictable, then I’d say football!
🎥 What's your favorite movie/TV show?
Andor
🍨 What's your go-to ice cream flavor?
