Ice Breakers

Ice Breakers with Yosia Sugialam (Co-founder and CEO, Paper.id)

July 12, 2024

Yosia Sugialam is the co-founder and CEO of Paper.id, a B2B invoicing and payment solution that streamlines and accelerates a business’ payment processes. They just raised a Series B this year!

👋🏼  How would you explain your job to someone outside tech?

I help business owners make and spend money, enabling them to both receive payments and manage outgoing transactions effortlessly.

🧐  What's something about you or your job that would surprise us?

From the early days of Paper.id up to 2022, the contact number listed for customer service on our website was actually my personal number. I was Josh from the Customer Service team in that support channel. No title, just pure feedback from our users. This hands-on approach allowed me to deeply understand our user needs and shape the direction of our company.

🏆  What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?

Two simple things:

1. Making an impact on our users and hearing them say, “Thank you for helping us through Paper.id.” To this day still gives the biggest high of my career. I LOVE making an impact through what we do in Paper.id.

2. Watching our team members the past 6 years grow as individuals. Them becoming much better, more experienced, and having more empathy towards our users is an absolute joy.

🔍  What's a startup trend or space you're watching this year?

AI-backed technologies are particularly exciting this year. We've seen AI implemented in many aspects of our daily lives but not much in business processes. Imagine having AI manage meticulous tasks like creating and managing business invoices, which streamlines operations and reduces human error. This trend has the potential to revolutionize efficiency and productivity in countless industries.

💼  What advice would you give someone starting out in your industry?

Be customer-obsessed; your customer is your boss. Focusing on your customers helps define your business roadmap and ensures that you are meeting real needs. No business goes bankrupt by prioritizing its customers. In fact, you will see your customers turned into Obsessed Customers. They will happily be ambassadors of your company.

🗣  What's one thing you can keep talking about for hours?

I could talk endlessly about my travel experiences, as each journey brings new perspectives and eye-opening moments that I love sharing with others.

🎥  What's your favorite movie/TV show?

I like movies and TV shows that have depth and romantic moments. Romantic here is not in the sense of typical love romance, but in the "Money Heist" type of romance where ideals and values are being fought for.

🍨  What's your go-to ice cream flavor?

Vanilla or Rum Raisin. Yes, I'm that plain.
