Mayani

Say hey to Mayani! This Philippine startup just harvested $1.7M in seed funding led by AgFunder's GROW Impact Fund. They run a marketplace with produce sourced from local farmers and fisherfolk — but that's not all!

  • Founded in 2019, they have 139,000+ smallholder farmers and fisherfolk and 11,000+ customers on their platform.
  • Customers include international hotels, restaurants, food processors and supermarket chains like Shell, Robinsons Group, Kopiko, WalterMart and MerryMart.

Investor check. Atlas Ventures, Accelerating Asia Ventures, Ocean Impact Organization, TheVentures and Plug and Play Ventures also joined in!

  • Other investors include the families behind Philippine media giant GMA (Jimenez family), OSK Group and Abenson Group.
  • This is Silicon Valley-based AgFunder's first Philippine investment.

⬇️ Started from the bottom

They started with fresh lowland produce like lettuce and eggplant farms. Later, they expanded to multiple categories like poultry, processed commodities like Liberica coffee and high-value fruits like gold honeydew melons.

  • They directly source these products from their farmer network.

🤩 Now we're here

Apart from that, they also distribute imperfect crops like crooked carrots and small potatoes that would usually not make it to supermarkets and end up as food waste.

  • They've delivered 6.5 tons of imperfect crops to individual customers (B2C) and 40+ tons to B2B company clients.
  • They are also working with fisherfolk!

💯 Why it matters

Good for you, good for them! Mayani's systems and supply chain of farmers allow buyers like us to get cheaper products. At the same time, farmers' incomes are boosted by at least 30% while reducing food loss by 20%!

  • They leverage demand and supply data to increase efficiency and shorten the route and time-to-market for these products with fewer middlemen.

🚀 What's next

They're looking to expand their operations across the Philippines and also build on the tech side. This includes tech that utilizes their various data points to sell agricultural input and build financing models to help their partner farmers and fisherfolk.

  • They're also looking to raise their Series A!
