Validus receives $50M from HSBC for Indonesia's MSMEs

  • They last raised funding early this year, focused on their Vietnam subsidiary.
  • They’re active in four markets.
  • They average $150M in new loan disbursals per month.

💡 What’s the problem?

64.2M MSMEs contributing 61% of Indonesia’s GDP, according to Indonesia’s Ministry for Economic Affairs.

  • That’s 97% of the workforce. These MSMEs employ about 119.6M people.

But, only about 17.5M MSME players are tapping into the online ecosystem and e-commerce.

  • They’re also struggling to access financing, mainly due to commercial banks’ tough operational, reporting, and collateral requirements
  • A World Bank Report from 2017 shares that only around 20% of bank loans go to MSMEs.

🤔 What’s the biz?

Founded in 2015, they offer working capital and SME loan solutions for businesses.

  • Through their platform, you can also open a business account and manage your team’s budget.
  • They also let you issue corporate cards and facilitate payment transfers to your suppliers, customers, and employees.

Their lending model is supply-chain focused and uses non-traditional data through partnerships with traditional banks and international institutions.

  • Their lenders include international institutions and leading local banks like Citi, HSBC, FMO, Credit Saison, CIMB Niaga, and Bank Mandiri.
