Wavemaker Impact invests in Octayne to turn agricultural waste into energy

June 14, 2024

One man’s trash is another’s… energy? Meet Octayne. This startup turns farm waste into energy, and they’ve just raised a $525,000 pre-seed!

  • They’ll initially target Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam before expanding across Southeast Asia.

Investor check. Wavemaker Impact.

💭 The context

They claim Southeast Asia generates 400M tons of post-harvest crop residue.

  • Many burn this, which leads to cities being covered in choking haze.

🔥 The solution

Instead of burning it, Octayne is looking to turn this rarely used biowaste into a low-cost, renewable, and sustainable energy source.

  • This is also easily scalable and carbon-neutral.

They see this as an alternative source of renewable energy, especially while solar and wind energy haven’t hit mainstream adoption.

  • It can be a drop-in replacement for their regular fuel sources like coal (which is widely used in SEA).

The goal? Eliminate coal dependency in Southeast Asia without affecting the region’s development ambitions. Oh, and encourage adoption of alternative fuels into existing infrastructure.

🌾 What the future holds?

They’ll use the $$$ to execute pilot projects and develop their technical product and platform. Oh, and if you’re from the green energy and industrial space, they’re hiring!
